NW Joint Trade Union Covid Action Group Report Of Last Meeting

31 January 2025 – Unison Offices Manchester

CWU's Ex-Branch Health & Safety Officer and Safety Rep, Ex-Secretary of the NW BT Unions Health Safety
Co-ord, Derek Maylor; reports on the latest from the region's Trade Union Covid Action Group:

Every Story Matters:

As part of the UK Covid-19 Inquiry there is a call for experiences to be shared which may be of interest to CWU retired members. The pandemic affected every member and for some it may continue to have a lasting impact on lives, this is an opportunity tell the Inquiry the impact it had on life, work, family and friends by sharing as much or as little information as they wish to. Every story will assist the Inquiry understand the full impact of the pandemic, develop recommendations and protect future generations like our grandchildren. Feedback will be anonymous.

The NW face-to-face sessions are in Manchester Town Hall in February, but comments can be emailed via the Every Story Matters website.

There is to be another national Covid-19 Day of Reflection on 9th March but as the 15th March is Long Covid Action Day some regions will combine the two with a single event, for the NW further details to follow after consultations with the bereaved. Considering this and as part of the Group’s Covid memorial tree planting in the NW (there is currently a budget for three oak trees) a tree is to be planted in St Helens at Vera Page Park, near to the Steve Prescott Bridge.

There is a petition on the UK Government and Parliament petition website to introduce new air quality and PPE rules for health and social care settings here

The Group is particularly keen to note that the Institute of Employment Rights Long Covid event (left) is not merely educational for H&S Reps but for IR Reps who need the information in supporting members to managers.

There is only room for 50 attendees, but it will be a hybrid event so can be accessed remotely.

Click on the image left to register to attend the event, and also email GM Hazards campaign organiser Janet to advise her that you wish to attend on-line.

The relevance to retired members is that even though they have BT or Royal Mail etc if they contracted Covid during their employment there may be a case for Personal Injury Compensation.
